Great Sand Dunes Sandboarding Excursion

Great Sand Dunes National Park is a stunning and unique destination. I couldn’t believe I was still in Colorado as I looked at the landscape of towering sand dunes, and then I was snapped back to reality when I saw the Colorado mountains on the right side. One of the features that really persuaded us to take the detour was how dog-friendly it is—leashed pets are welcome in many areas, including the main dune field and along Medano Creek. My puppies LOVED galloping in the sand. Mind you, we went at a time of year where the sand was not hot. For those traveling with their fuzzy buddies, this park is a rare and wonderful find. There are also several accessible viewpoints for visitors who may not want to or be able to hike the dunes. The Dunes Overlook Trail and parking areas along the main road offer breathtaking panoramic views without the climb. The visitor center also has a floor to ceiling window where you can view the entire dune range without even really driving much into the park if that’s what you’re looking for. Some cons include the shifting sand being exhausting to hike through, especially on hot days when temperatures rise quickly. Sand in your shoes is practically guaranteed—bring gaiters or be prepared to empty your shoes often. I swear I was pouring small molehills out of my converse after we walked to the base of the dune- though I can imagine it would be comfortable wearing something open toed and to have blazing hot sand on your feet in the summer. So, pick your poison I suppose Despite these challenges, the natural beauty and welcoming atmosphere make this park well worth the effort. If you’re looking for a peaceful, pet-friendly adventure with views that wow at every turn, Great Sand Dunes should be high on your list.

absolutely stunning! The views are incredible, and it's such a unique landscape. We went on a hike and were blown away by the beauty. Just a heads up though, it was super windy and cold, Make sure to double-check the weather before you go and bundle up! Also, if you get there before 9 AM, admission is free!" 🌅❤️ There's also a picnic Area and a visitor center where you can find some pretty souvenirs.

The park is nice. The hike is nice and challenging. Sand dunes looked amazing and the mountains too. Sunset was really something, as shown in the pictures. BUT, the hike was kinda challenging for an okay result. I know its the sand dunes but its just sand the whole way. It’s kinda repetitive even if you walk like 6 miles it’s lowkey the same stuff. Overall a nice place but definitely not in my favorite national parks.

One of the most unique national parks I’ve ever visited, and I want to go back! I visited with my friends and their 2 young girls. No hiking to the top but sand sledding! Fun stuff but so much effort to haul the sleds back up the dune. Get ready to work out.

An off the beaten path National Park that on paper sounds boring when in reality it's transformative. Enormous sand dunes rise at the base of the Rocky Mountains. It feels unworldly to be there. Leave your beach toys, carts, and pets at home. The strong wind and steep inclines make this a beautiful but challenging terrain. Local shops at the edge of the park sell sand boards for going down the sides of the dunes. Unless it's winter standard snowboards and sleds will not work well. The sand will cut into their bottoms and you won't go very far.
