Sunrise Tour to Mauna Kea Summit

Most gorgeous sunset!! We chose a tour which included sunset and star gazing, and was absolutely worth it. The views were breathtakingly beautiful! There were a good number of people during sunset. Only 4x4 is allowed on the road to the summit. And the tricky bit is when going down, to go on low gear so as not to have any brake failures. It was very cold at the top, a very warm jacket with hood, gloves and closed toe shoes helped.

It’s important to be mindful of the altitude and prepare accordingly, but the journey is absolutely worth it. If you’re on the Big Island, visiting Mauna Kea is a must. A must visit while on the Big Island. They allow only 4WD vehicles to continue above the visitor center and only after a 30 min wait at the visitor center to see if anyone suffers from altitude sickness. After a short briefing on how to use engine breaks on the way down and what to do in case someone gets an altitude sickness, it takes about 20 min to drive up to the summit. The road to the summit is an easy partially unpaved, partially paved road not rough at all, but it is very steep and, on the way back, requires shifting to 4L and manually shifting to low gear to use the engine break. They check the temperature of your breaks on the way back, so make sure you follow the instructions.

You need a 4x4 vehicle. The drive up there is long and slow and it looks like nothing interesting then Boom! The telescopes! We went mid-morning and though the sun was up it was cold! Take a jacket/hoodie and long pants. It is also pretty windy! Please pay attention to the ranger’s instructions about driving (speed and brakes) and hypoxia symptoms. It’s for your safety. If I ever get a chance to go back, I’ll try for an evening visit to catch the sunset!
